Differences between the show and the books

jo and I had an interesting discussion about the first couple of seasons of the TV adaptation and some differences between the show and the books in this comment thread. 

Feel free to continue the discussion over here or in the thread, but please warn for spoilers beyond episode 308 as I'm not fully caught up yet on the show and the books.

I am all for continuing this discussion -- but I'm not sure where to start/pick up? Do you want to focus on some of the differences between book 1 and season 1 maybe? I'm just happy to discuss this stuff at all, so I'll let you lead since you're the one at various stages between books and show!
